Mood-boosting Books

Our brand-new Mood-boosting Books promotion launched in January 2012. Research shows that reading improves mental well-being. Our Mood-boosting Books promotion is aimed at adults, particularly those who might have experienced mild to moderate mental-health conditions linked to stress, anxiety and depression.

Eight reading groups around the country have read, reviewed and recommended 27 Mood-boosting Books. We launched this booklist of 27 titles in January - it includes books ranging from novels and non-fiction to poetry and graphic novels. There are also titles which are suitable for less confident readers.

There are also packs of promotional goodies (A5 leaflets (4 pages), A4 posters, A3 headers, and a downloadable booklist and review cards) which you can order at £10 a pack from our shop.

There will be more Mood-boosting Books offers and freebies from January on Reading Groups for Everyone, plus we will be asking you to post your reviews of the Mood-boosting Books so that you can be in with the chance of winning a set of books for your reading group.

If you would like to know more about the promotion, please email moodboosting@readingagency.org.uk.

Mood-boosting Books 2010

In 2010 we launched a new promotion called 'Mood-boosting Books' in partnership with the BBC.

The Reading Agency teamed up with BBC Headroom to work with reading groups around the country to review and identify a selection of Mood-boosting Books. The books chosen by the groups made up a booklist, which formed the centre of the promotion, and the booklist was supplemented with promotional material.

The promotion was aimed at all adults, particularly those who might have experienced mild mental-health conditions. All the books on the reading list were around creative reading - mainly fiction, with some non-fiction and poetry.

The promotion launched in libraries on World Mental Health Day on 10 October and ran until January.

The Reading Agency would like to thank the following reading groups for participating in the project:

  • The Tuesday Group, Portsmouth
  • East Boldon Tuesday Reading Group, South Tyneside
  • Hendon Book Chat Group, Sunderland
  • Washington Mind Book Chat Group, Sunderland
  • Maida Vale Library Reading Group, London Borough of Westminster

We would also like to thank Charley Baker, University Teacher in Mental Health at the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Physiotherapy at the University of Nottingham for endorsing the titles on the booklist.
