The Vital Link principles

The Reading Agency runs a range of activity to enable and encourage public libraries and learning providers to work together to create an exciting offer to new readers - a welcoming space with friendly staff, support to learn, the right books and lots of creative ways of promoting them. This is underpinned by the principles of The Vital Link - our approach to partnership working between the library and adult literacy sectors.

This is based on the Vital Link improvement framework which sets out the management commitment and inputs required from library services if they are to achieve the outcome of a high-quality reading service for emergent readers. More than 80% of English library services have signed up to this approach and provision for adult literacy learners is a priority for the Society of Chief Librarians.

We have now revised this framework (downloadable from this page) in order to develop a new capacity-building programme for libraries engaged in supporting the adult learning and skills agenda. New training modules will be available from spring 2010. Please contact Genevieve Clarke if you would like to know more about this.
