Katherine Swift - The Morville Hours

May to December 2008

'The Morville Hours' is an exquisitely written book about time and the garden that uses the form of the medieval books of hours. Katherine Swift is available for library events and talks to reading groups.

Katherine Swift took out a lease on the Dower House at Morville Hall in Shropshire 20 years ago, the garden was a flat piece of land. There now stands a series of beautifully tended gardens, all interconnected and created according to a different time and gardening practice - Medieval, Tudor, etc, plus a beautiful turf maze in the centre which is one of only a few in the UK. Katherine planted every box hedge, dug out the canal, and grew every plant, tree and shrub from scratch.

Before moving to Shropshire, Katherine worked as a rare book librarian in Oxford and Dublin before becoming a full-time gardener and writer in 1988. She was for four years gardening columnist of The Times, and has written widely in the gardening press, including an acclaimed series on the gardens and landscapes of Orkney for Hortus.
