World Book Day 2012

World Book Day - the biggest ever celebration of reading - will take place in schools, libraries and other venues around the UK on 1 March.

If you are a library and haven't yet told us your plans for World Book Day, please do so here.

Schools and libraries working together

If you work in a school, you can find your local library here.

You can also get in touch with your school library service.

World Book Day and libraries

There will be a library membership drive; library joining forms will be included in schools packs with messages, such as 'join a friend to the library', 'bring your grown-up to the library' and 'get your family to join the library on WBD'

An online festival showcasing the cream of children's publishing talent will be streamed into libraries, schools and cinemas across the UK on World Book Day. You can read about the online festival and register to take part here. You can register to stream the nursery/pre-school event (9am-10am on WBD) and/or the primary event (11am-12pm on WBD).

The Storytelling Superstar competition has launched! (Deadline: 13 February) Whether it's a mum or dad, grandparent, babysitter, librarian or teacher, the hunt is on for somebody who thrills their young audience and adds an extra element of fun to reading aloud. Why not apply and encourage your colleagues and library visitors to do so too?

There will also be an exciting teen digital initiative, featuring downloadable short stories by well-known authors.

A World Book Day flagship event in each of the 12 UK regions will take place during the week of WBD, which will be delivered through input from Children's Reading Partners (CRP) publishers. More details about the flagship events will follow in the coming weeks.

If you are not able to host an event on World Book Day or during the WBD week due to constraints on staff capacity, we would like to encourage you to badge existing children's/family activity on Thursday 1 March, or to reschedule existing activity to take place on that day, so that everyone is hosting a WBD-linked activity, without using extra capacity.

There will be a WBD toolkit, along with press release templates, and letter templates for contacting schools, available from the World Book Day and Reading Agency websites in late January. A World Book Day themed Chatterpack will also be available.

We are working with World Book Day to ensure that libraries are incorporated into the World Book Day PR. This includes outlining all the great things that libraries have to offer, and positioning the Summer Reading Challenge (for children to take part, and for young people to volunteer) as the next step after World Book Day.

As in previous years, we hope that you will work in partnership with schools. In the WBD newsletters that have gone out to primary and secondary schools, we have outlined the importance of libraries in promoting World Book Day. For example, we have suggested that schools arrange class visits to the library, encourage children to take their families to the library, and highlight the Summer Reading Challenge or Summer Reading Challenge volunteering to pupils.

World Book Day 2012 promotional material

This year the World Book Day promotional packs are being dispatched to every library authority by Bertrams, and Askews and Holts library suppliers. This is so that you do not have to pay postage and packaging costs, as in previous years. Each poster pack will contain 4 x different A2 posters, and will be dispatched by 27 January with book deliveries, to arrive in plenty of time for World Book Day.

The WBD packs will contain instructions stating that they should be forwarded to the reader development contact in each authority, but we suggest that you also contact the stock team at the beginning of February to ensure that the material is forwarded on to you.

You can use the World Book Day campaign materials to promote World Book Day and publicise events and activities organised around the day.

Booked Up

The Booked Up programme gives all Year 7 children in England the chance to choose a free book from a list of specially selected titles when they begin secondary school. Booked Up's goal is to encourage reading for pleasure and independent choice.

In 2010, The Reading Agency was commissioned by Booktrust to promote Booked Up in public libraries and school library services.

Booked Up display competition

The winner of the Booked Up display competition 2010 was Ware Library in Hertfordshire. You can view their fantastic display, along with those of the three runners up, on the Booked Up website.

Booked Up in libraries

Library services signing up to the promotion received a free set of 13 Booked Up books for their library service points. They also received a pack of POS material, including plenty of suggestions for easy ways to make the most of the books. School library services could order one set of the books and a POS pack.

The Booked Up books and material are completely free, but libraries participating in Booked Up 2010, were asked to:

Service the Booked Up books for loan

Put up displays of the titles (see the Booked Up website for details of a great display competition)

Make front line staff aware of the initiative and able to support young people asking about the books and wider reading

Run activities in partnership with schools

Provide feedback for evaluation: we will be sending out evaluation questionnaires to all service points involved with the project in the autumn

Training and advocacy (including PowerPoints)

About the PowerPoints provided

There are thee PowerPoints provided, described below:

Quest Seekers Children's PowerPoint

Quest Seekers School/teacher PowerPoint

Quest Seekers Training PowerPoint

Quest Seekers Children's PowerPoint

This has been designed to appeal to children and families to encourage children to join in.

It can be used as a backdrop in the library, perhaps as a default on computer terminals, or plasma screens, and when presenting to groups of children in schools, outreach groups, Brownies, Cubs etc. Some health centres/ surgeries may also be able to play it as a slide show in waiting rooms etc.

The powerpoint is not locked so you can customise it with additional slides or edit the text to suit. The font used is Comic Sans MS regular.

On slide 7 we have plucked a typical start and finish date: 17th July and 4th September. Please edit to reflect your dates / or delete dates.

QuestSeekersChildrensPowerPoint

Quest Seekers School/teacher PowerPoint

This PowerPoint summarises the key facts and figures about the scale of the Summer Reading Challenge, how it works, the materials (including the Beyond Quest Seekers and Booked Up booklet) and some quotes from users. We used a shorter version of this to talk to teachers and literacy advisers at a national conference about the Summer Reading Challenge, and we think you will find it useful for similar presentations to education / other partners.

The powerpoint is not locked so you can customise it to make is shorter or with additional slides or delete those not relevant, and edit the text to suit.

You may want to add a slide/ point about dates the challenge is running in your area, any local partnerships and plans and perhaps change the quotes with some from local families, teachers, staff etc. The font used is Aerial regular.

QuestSeekersSchoolsPartnersPowerPoint.ppt

Quest Seekers Training PowerPoint

This is designed to complement your library staff training. It is a checklist for planning with library staff in preparation for running the summer reading challenge. the challenge is designed to be flexible, to fit individual library authority requirements, so it can be amended to reflect your own system. See the accompanying training notes: Running Quest Seekers SRC.doc
