On this page you can find out about our work that supports schools. In many cases we support schools and libraries to work together. If you would like to find out more please get in touch.

groupthing

groupthing is the major new initiative we launched in June 2009. It's a new online community where young people aged 13 to up to 18 can be creative. Young people can write, review, chat and 'meet' authors on the site as well as publish their own creative work.

Schools, libraries and other professionals working with young people can buy a subscription to groupthing starting from £90 for a year's subscription and access the professional side of the site where they can find out what's going on, talk to other professionals and exchange ideas. It's also the place to launch a group page for your young people.

Chatterbooks

The Chatterbooks are reading groups for children aged eight to eleven. The Reading Agency has been running Chatterbooks groups in libraries since 2002. Currently over 8000 children are part of over 560 Chatterbooks reading groups run in 145 different library services and some are starting to be run in schools as part of extended schools services and free reading time. Children love the regular meetings and club like atmosphere.

Every child joining a Chatterbooks reading group gets a fun book bag containing everything they need to take part including stickers and a reading diary.

Chatterbooks and schools

This autumn we are extending Chatterbooks into schools and have invited schools library services to include Chatterbooks as part of their offer to their schools. If you use your schools library service then get in touch to find out if they are offering Chatterbooks. Schools who don't have schools library services can buy Chatterbooks directly from us.

Summer Reading Challenge

space hop logo small 1.jpg The Summer Reading Challenge is the UK's biggest reading promotion for primary school pupils. It is organised by The Reading Agency and runs annually through public libraries during the summer holidays. The Challenge inspires children to read in the long summer break - when their reading skills are known to decline - without the regular reading activity provided at school. Research shows taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge improves children's reading range, confidence and enjoyment.

Follow the link for resources and ideas to involve your pupils in this year's Summer Reading Challenge and link up with your local library.

HeadSpace

We've been working with young people, libraries and youth services to create places where young people aged 11 to 19 can read, listen, surf and chill. We'd like to hear from any schools who is thinking of refurbishing their library or building a new library who would like to use HeadSpace to design that space and provide their pupils with accredited volunteering opportunities.
