About

Find a Read is a unique and free online searchable database that helps you find your next read, in particular for adults who are less confident readers. It is run by The Reading Agency.

The database contains a combination of mainstream titles and titles specially written for emergent readers (those who can read, but have yet to build reading stamina and experience).

Materials range from those suitable for Pre-Entry Level up to Level 2 readers in a variety of formats - audio, books, ebooks, games, large print, newspapers and magazines, websites and others.

Find a Read supports the work of other adult literacy projects The Reading Agency carries out, including the Six Book Challenge and Chatabout.

Find a Read builds on a previous Reading Agency project called First Choice Books. We've added more reading levels (including those for Entry Level readers) and a wider range of formats (including digital texts).

What type of titles are on Find a Read?

There's everything from romance and crime fiction, to sport and gaming. You'll find fiction, non-fiction, poetry, short stories and graphic novels as well as children's titles that have been chosen for adults who struggle with reading to share with their children.

How are titles chosen for Find a Read?

All the items on Find a Read are assessed for their suitability for emergent adult readers. We select items that are suitable for readers who have lower literacy levels, have a clear typeface (font size 12 point and upwards) and are 200 pages or less.

You can find out more about how we assess titles when you recommend a read.

How can I use Find a Read?

You can use Find a Read to... find your next read! Adult readers can use the site to search by different criteria - levels, format, categories or key words.

Library staff and learning providers can also carry out advanced searches (by SMOG level, whether illustrated or using the ISBN) and also print off item lists.

We'd also like adult readers, library staff and learning providers to recommend a read so we can keep adding to this unique database.

I'm a publisher, how can I get items added to Find a Read?

We have to review each item before it is added to the database and would love to view your material. Please do contact us.
