Families

We are very aware that parents are any child's first and most enduring educators. There's plenty of research which shows how important parents are for their children's learning and development. Where parents are involved in their children's learning, children do better at school.

Out of the Box

Out of the Box is our joint project with The National Youth Agency. Thanks to funding from the Department of Children Schools and Families we are running projects to identify ways to get young people who are not interested in formal education, to get fired up and excited about reading.

Library Offer to young people

groupthing

There are two sides to our groupthing offer - groupthing.org and groupthing professional. "groupthing.org":http:/www.groupthing.org is a safe, accessible social network for young people to have conversations with other young people about reading, writing and words and where they can publish their own creative work. groupthing professional offers libraries, schools and other organisations working with young people: * the opportunity to have conversations with other professionals to extend and develop their work * resources, ideas, competitions, give-aways and promotions to help engage young people in creative reading activities

HeadSpace

HeadSpace is the project that proves that we can successfully put young people at the heart of projects meant for them. Working in partnership with young people, libraries and youth services we've created places where young people aged 11 to 19 can read, listen, surf and chill. It is a place where the experience of enjoying reading can be shared, where young people can meet others, take part in positive activities, volunteer, seek information and inspiration, or simply pick up a book and enjoy a drink and a snack.

FtP Yorkshire and Humberside

Following on from Fulfilling their Potential NoW we ran Fulfilling their Potential Yorkshire and Humberside.

FtP NoW

Fulfilling their Potential north west (FtP NoW) trialled some of the ways that young people can get involved in libraries.

Fulfilling their Potential

Over the course of two years we consulted young people to hear what they think of their local libraries and what they want to find in their local libraries. We consulted young people who don't often get asked these sorts of questions to help open up the fabulous world of books, reading and libraries to them. Fulfilling the Potential was part of the government's national strategy Framework for the Future, which sets out their vision for modern public libraries.

Booktrust Teenage Prize

The Booktrust Teenage Prize does what it says on the tin - it celebrates the best in literature for teenagers with an annual award.

Young People

It can be tough to get young people reading for pleasure. With so many things competing for their free time, survey after survey has found that young people's interest in reading can drop off - particularly once they get to secondary school.
