Booked Up
There's no such thing as a free lunch, so they say, but there is such a thing as a free book. All year 7 children starting secondary school in England will be given a free book. They can choose from one of 12 titles selected to introduce them to some writers and topics that they might not have come across before.
The scheme is being run by the Booktrust and funded by the government's Department for Children Schools and Families (DCSF). We have teamed up with Booktrust to help librarians give children the chance to read all 12 free titles in their local library, to promote public libraries and school libraries working together and to supply the promotional materials to participating libraries.
Last year 672 000 Year 7 pupils received a free Booked Up book. A staggering 2300 library service points took part in the project helping children in their local communities make their book choices. Libraries can sign up to this year's Booked Up programme on June 1st.
